| The origins of this magnificently preserved castle go back to the 9th century, although the main building dates from 14th century. Sympathetic refurbishment over the ages has transformed it into an international hotel offering an exciting blend of ancient history and modern luxury. All 62 bedrooms are uniquely furnished, from the genuine Queen four-poster in the King James suite to the rustic charm and old beams of the courtyard rooms. Subdued lighting, hidden corridors and secret passages enhance the delightful atmosphere of the hotel. Well chosen wines and delicious cooking tempt the palate in the candle-lit restaurant, where medieval pillars support a multi-doomed ceiling. The popular weekly Elizabethan Banquets are now in their 26th year. They are held in the Baron`s Hall, where guests enjoy a five course feast while tuneful troubadours entertain them from minstrels gallery Medieval Memories and Murder Mystery weekends are also held. For conferences and functions, a full-time professional is available to discuss individual needs. Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year`s Day. |
