View: 3426   Date added: Sep 07, 2006 The house takes its name from earth works to the east of its walled gardens, believed to be the site of a Roman fort. It was built originally as a hunting lodge in 1625 for the Dukes of Perth. It passed into the ownership of Viscount Esher in 1897. The turrets that give the building its unique character were added at that time. The house became a hotel in 1939. Each of the 14 bedrooms has its own distinctive style and character. Some have coombed walls and furniture dating back 200 years. All are equipped with the little thoughtful extras that make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. The library, panelled in 16th Century oak, takes on a mellow atmosphere in the evening with the glow of a log fire, lit even in summer. The drawing room is bright and soft, with silk-lined walls. The oval restaurant features tapestries of English cathedrals woven by Elizabeth Esher in the 1930s. Menus change daily and are prepared from local ingredients in season. There are tasting, a la carte and vegetarian menus. Beyond the 20 acres of tranquil parkland and gardens with views of the River Teith are the Trossachs and the Highlands. This is a land of mountain and glen, rolling pastures and heather moor. It is a marvellous base for your Scottish holiday.
