Featured in Conan Doyle`s The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Castle Inn lies on the Western slopes of Dartmoor National Park. Built in 1550, its plain pink exterior offers no clue to what awaits you inside. Slate floors, stonewalls and low bowed ceilings house a superb collection of high backed settles and curios from every era. The charming restaurant features a great Norman fireplace allegedly originating from the 12th century castle next door. The bedrooms are all ensuite with television and direct dial telephone, are all decorated in individual styles. There is a covered patio at the back with more seating in the pretty gardens. The hidden remains of a bronze age fort nearby suggest the area around Lydford was inhabited long before Christ and it was here that a Royal Mint was established during the reign of Ethelred the Unready, producing `Lydford Pennies` which can be seen in the restaurant area.
