A** Harden`s Guide Top UK restaurant 2000 - 2006
One of the best Romantic Restaurants The Times
- A Country House with a warm and relaxing atmosphere
- Excellent touring base for the whole of East Anglia
- Leisure breaks available Tuesdays - Thursdays
- Two night stay including Dinner Bed and Breakfasts at £75 per person, per night, sharing a superior double room.
Built in the 15thc, then updated in the 18thc, The Great House is a very authentic
English country house with polished floorboards, oak beams and log fires.
Its French restaurant has been one of the highlights of Suffolk for the last
20 years with chef/owner Régis Crépy. Do expect `a seriously good cuisine,
but far from solemn`. The Set menus offer excellent value and the huge selection
of the French cheese-board has received numerous awards.
In the paved flowery patio, you can enjoy lunch, dinner and even breakfast if you choose to stay overnight.
The five beautifully renovated ensuite bedrooms have their own individual style and
retain much of their original character with beams and sloping ceilings. Two have
separated sitting rooms. One 6 foot Four Poster Bed. Fresh fruits, mineral water and
a decanter of sherry welcome each guest. The hidden Walled Garden, through an
alleyway, provides the perfect retreat for newspaper readers.
Lavenham is described as `England`s finest medieval Town`. Fine Tudor townhouses
mingle with small crooked cottages. Visit the magnificent `Wool Church`, the famous
National Trust Guildhall and the Little Hall Museum. Wander around the little streets
with its shops, antiques, art galleries...
Places to visit from Lavenham: Cambridge, Newmarket, Bury St Edmunds, Colchester,
Long Melford, Constable Country, the Wool Villages, Suffolk Heritage Coast, Norfolk.
